We are proud to share that Cresco advised BIOFIBIX on the successful spin-off of their groundbreaking flax-fibre composite technology from KU Leuven.
BIOFIBIX, founded by Gilles Koolen and Stijn Vanacker, brings to market a unique fibre-treatment process developed within the Department of Materials Engineering. Their Hypermat technology enables the cost-efficient and scalable production of high-performance flax-fibre composites: light, stiff, shock-absorbing, and significantly more sustainable than carbon fibre.
BIOFIBIX raised €300,000 in initial funding to scale production capacity and further commercialize its technology, with Vanacker Rumbeke BV joining as co-founder and strategic partner ensuring a stable, high-quality flax supply. The technology is already finding its way into high-end sports equipment such as padel rackets, with broader applications on the horizon.
We thank founders Gilles Koolen and Stijn Vanacker for their trust, and extend our appreciation to Kurt De Smet and Sam Baeten of KU Leuven for the excellent collaboration throughout the spin-off process.
Cresco has extensive experience advising academic founders, TTOs and investors in university spin-offs, guiding deep-tech ventures from lab to market with a solid legal and strategic foundation.
The Cresco deal team consisted of Olivier Van Raemdonck and Charles Groffils.
