SpectaCell is developing an imaging platform for cell analysis that helps pharma and biotech companies assess drug candidates faster and decide earlier in the process which ones to further develop. Current cell assays take days and measure an average across a sample. SpectaCell instead combines chip-based imaging with data analytics to follow thousands of individual cells and their interactions within hours. The platform brings together imec’s technology, VIB’s biological expertise and the scientific and clinical know-how of Ghent University and UZ Ghent. Its first focus is on new immunotherapies for cancer and immune disorders, with further applications in manufacturing and quality control.
The seed capital will be used to further develop and validate the prototype with pharma partners, with a foothold in the Leiden immunotherapy hub through its Dutch investor.
Cresco has extensive experience in the creation and financing of spin-offs, from extracting unique intellectual property from research institutions through formation, funding and day-to-day assistance. We work closely with the Flemish innovation ecosystem, including tech transfer offices, university-linked funds and public and private venture capital investors, and know their processes and expectations. SpectaCell is a good example of where this ecosystem is heading: techbio companies combining semiconductor technology with life sciences, built on cooperation between several research institutions and an international investor syndicate.
We congratulate founders Tony Montoye, Mathieu Rabaey, Jan Van de Velde and Veronique De Vroey, and all investors on this milestone, and thank everyone involved for the constructive collaboration.
The Cresco deal team consisted of David Dessers, Olivier Van Raemdonck and Dominik Verbist.
